Perfume oil concentration refers to the amount of oil present in a perfume. This dosage determines four key aspects:
(1) The category of fragrance it falls into,
(2) the intensity of the scent,
(3) its sillage (the trail it leaves behind when applied to the skin), and
(4) its longevity.
Every fragrance is categorized based on its strength, which is reflected in the name seen on the bottle. Look out for names like Parfum, Eau De Toilette, or Cologne.
These are the primary categories to consider.
PURE PARFUM/PARFUM EXTRAIT:
30% TO 40% OIL At the pinnacle of perfume oil concentration sits Pure Parfum (or Extrait de Parfum). With a concentration of 30% to 40% oil, a few sprays of this luxurious fragrance can last well into the evening, typically six to eight hours or more. Pure Parfum offers top-notch ingredients, exceptional longevity, and often comes with a luxurious price tag, but it's worth the investment.
EAU DE PARFUM:
15% TO 20% OIL Following closely in concentration is Eau De Parfum (EDP), with 15% to 20% oil. This concentration provides a solid three to four hours of fragrance. Those with sensitive skin should be cautious, as EDPs contain a higher alcohol concentration that may lead to skin dryness.
EAU DE TOILETTE:
5% TO 15% OIL Eau de Toilette (EDT) features a concentration of 5% to 15% oil, making it more affordable and popular for daily wear. Lasting two to three hours, EDT is often considered a daytime perfume option, but may require reapplication throughout the day.
EAU DE COLOGNE:
2-4% Eau de Cologne (EDC) has a low fragrance concentration of 2% to 4%, accompanied by a high alcohol content. While inexpensive, Cologne may dry out the skin and typically lasts up to two hours, requiring more frequent application.
AFTERSHAVE:
1-3% Aftershave contains a low oil concentration similar to Eau Fraiche, along with antiseptic properties to soothe skin post-shave. Ideal for a quick morning splash, it may need frequent reapplication throughout the day.
EAU FRAICHE:
1-3% As the most affordable option, Eau Fraiche boasts a low oil concentration, making it suitable for sensitive skin. Composed mostly of water, Eau Fraiche lasts around two hours and may require multiple reapplications throughout the day for optimal fragrance.
